My two cents on the Oscar noms:
Finally Gary Oldman is nominated for an Academy Award. Though Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy wasn’t my favorite film, Oldman showed how versatile of an actor he is in this role and should be commended. He’s probably not going to win it, though. Seems like Dujardin’s the man to beat.
I almost did cartwheels when I heard Nick Nolte was nominated for Warrior. That film is hugely overlooked and honestly, why aren’t Joel Edgerton or Tom Hardy being acknowledged for their performances, too? At the same time, I’m glad I didn’t attempt cartwheels, because I might have probably hurt myself anyway after consequently finding out that Jonah Hill was nominated for Moneyball.
I can’t even begin to express my disappointment that Kirsten Dunst, Tilda Swinton and Charlize Theron aren’t nominated in the Best Actress category for Melancholia, We Need to Talk about Kevin or Young Adult. Not quite sure I’m a fan of Rooney Mara being nominated in this category. Compared to the other three women mentioned, they definitely gave more compelling performances than Mara. I haven’t seen The Iron Lady yet, but Meryl Streep being nominated for anything and eventually winning in the category is an unfortunate fact of life that will always elicit an eyeroll from me. I have nothing but love for Meryl, but when people say “All the awards”, I don’t think we mean that she literally has to be nominated and eventually scoop up every award. While I appreciate acknowledging Melissa McCarthy for her supporting role in Bridesmaids as well as Bridesmaids getting a nom for Best Script, the Oscars needs to get over its phobia of comedy in general.
I’m shocked The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo got a nom for best editing. I thought the film had lots of problems in that regard. Also surprised The Adventures of Tintin wasn’t nominated for Best Animated Feature. And boo, no nod to Melancholia for cinematography?
